"In June of 2008, my husband and I got a dog. 'Get a dog' they said, 'it'll be fun' they said... So we got a gorgeous yellow lab puppy. We got him from a private breeder in Hatfield, PA. He was so stinking cute, I couldn't wait to get him. I demanded that the breeder let me take him home at six weeks. The breeder pleaded with me to wait another two weeks but, nope, I insisted!
I picked our little puppy up and drove him home - what a ride that was. He cried, yelped and whimpered the entire time - I thought this would pass - I was wrong.
That week I realized that we needed help. I worked long shifts at the hospital and my husband traveled quite extensively to the west coast. I found a "doggy daycare" close to my home. This daycare had a sign on their front lawn that stated "You leave them, we love them". Guess what, I picked him up one day after work a few weeks later and found that they put a shock collar on him?! So, actually I left him and they shocked him. Well, I found another doggy daycare and used that place for a couple of more weeks - my heart sank every time I dropped him off because he had his tail between his legs every time I dropped him off??
In the meantime of this daycare struggle, I was taking our Max to a dog park close to our home. I noticed a business card for dog walking in a plastic baggy attached to the park entrance. It was Leah's business card. I took a card and called her on the way home, while my out of control lab puppy, Max carried on like an idiot in the backseat. I needed help and I knew it.
Max was absolutely adorable and in true lab puppy fashion, he was trying our patience every stinking day.
Leah came to my home a couple of days after that first call to meet us and Max. Max was growing at lightning speed. He jumped right up on her and scratched her legs from her thighs to her ankles and left bright red streaks from his "claws". I thought well, she won't be back. I was wrong. She came back and so it began, our love affair with Leah, the girl who made our lives A LOT better!!
Leah, started to help me out picking Max up from his doggy daycare since I worked until 8pm and they closed at 6pm. Leah would pick up Max for me, feed him and put him in his crate for me. This was such a help because I had used up all the favors from my friends. These were the same friends that told us 'Get a dog, It'll be fun...'
Leah picked Max up from daycare for about a week and then she called me and offered that I quit the doggy daycare and just use her. Really? I thought, WOW I would much rather do that. From that day on, I gave Leah my work schedule each week and she would pick my Max up on those days, feed him and bring him to her home, where he played with her lab all day, then she would bring him home, feed him dinner and then tuck him into his crate. We used her 3 to 4 times, sometimes 5 times a week.
Keep in mind before Leah entered our lives, we contemplated whether or not we were going to be able to keep Max. He could have had an acting role in the movie, Marley and Me. Max was wound up with so much energy - it was really draining us. Several times, I cried because I didn't know how I was going to get through this. Would this dog ever get better? Would we get better with him?! It did! and we did!! All thanks to Leah!
When Max was 2 years old, we moved to California. Leah became more than a dog sitter/walker at that point. We trusted Leah with everything. It was a huge transition for us and I leaned on Leah a lot, she knew our home and lived close enough to help us with the overseeing of our move transition. At that point, Leah then became somewhat of a personal assistant of some sorts. We employed her to oversee home maintenance issues such has snow removal, mail, lawn and garden issues. She was able to go in the house and take care of whatever I asked of her. We were in the process of selling our home and could count on our realtor for nothing. I leaned on Leah a lot. Way too much to write about.
Leah being in our lives did not end there. We have lived in California for almost 5 years now and we fly Leah in for our big two week vacation when we leave the country every summer. Yes, that's right, we fly her to California to babysit Max and house sit. We have done this every summer. Leah, has remained a close family friend and visits us even on her own time.
That day six years ago I was lucky enough to take her business card that changed our lives with our dog for the better and I am so grateful to her for all she has done for us."
